This piece was inspired by a celebrity who's style has 50's influences. Cat eye glasses were a huge fashion statement in this era, and I really wanted to incorporate that into at least one on my paintings. Polka dots were also a popular pattern in the 1950's and 60's. This painting reminds me of a Hollywood star, and I want to have that old glamour feel to this piece. I really struggled with getting the skin color right. It's always hard for me to get enough contrast with the shadows and highlights of bone structures. I go layer by layer trying to build up color and correct myself. The hair is a big part of this because it's so dark compared to the rest of the painting, that viewer's eyes will be drawn to it. I layered different browns and blues to darken the hair and get a deep color. Starting with a lighter brown helped me get a sense of how I wanted the hair to flow and work on other parts of the piece. I chose a teal dress to compliment the white polka dots I'd be adding, and the brown of the hair. I have been trying to include a sea foam green or turquoise into a lot of my concentration pieces because when I think of this time era I think of people wearing that kind of color, cars painted teal, and diners being pink and turquoise. I tried sticking with more cool colors in this whole piece so they all compliment each other. The sun hat was also a struggle. I didn't want to add the straw hat texture in case it took away from the shadows and the way the hat moves. I feel like maybe I could've added the texture, but I wanted to have other patterns show more. At this point I wasn't sure what my background would include but I know I wanted her outside, so her hat could look like that from flopping in the wind. I think adding the palm trees continued to give it the california style I was reaching for. I want to continue adding leaves and make the composition really come together.
